Harry and I spent about half an hour this morning making some of the embroidered eggs featured here earlier this week, while we cooled down after ‘P. E. With Joe’. Well I needed to cool down, Harry seemed strangely unfazed by it all. We made daisies and forget-me-nots so we should have plenty for the Easter tree.
Then we moved on to these little fellas, also using a felt egg shape as a base but with additional ears and feet. Aren’t they cute?
For the chick you can use the offcuts of yellow felt from cutting your egg shape for little wings and a little orange triangle for a beak. If you don’t have extra felt you could embroider the beak on. The eyes are little French knots (remember them?) worked in black thread. I have used two ovals of white felt too but it would work equally well without.
Once you have stitched the decoration on to one of your egg shapes, stitch the two felt egg shapes together, trapping the wings and the ribbon loop between the layers. Add stuffing just before you get back to where you started and add a little ribbon bow to finish off. If you are adding feet, these can be stitched just at the bottom so they can flap!
For the bunny, I cut two long ears and two feet from white felt and and two smaller ears from pink felt. Again, the eyes were French knots, worked in black with a mouth and nose in back stitch. Once you have stitched the face on to one of your egg shapes, stitch the two felt egg shapes together, trapping the ears and the ribbon loop between the layers. Add stuffing just before you get back to where you started and add a little ribbon bow to finish off. The feet have pink ‘toes’ worked in little cross stitches and were caught just at the bottom so they can move.
I even added a little white pom pom on the back as I had lots left over from last years llama project!
I loved hearing your comments following the last post but I’m aware that not all of you have a stash of felt, thread, buttons and trims like me! If you can’t get hold of any from craft shops online and you would like to have a go at a project like this with your kids then drop me a line. I have lots! For a small charge I could put together a little pack of felt, thread and ribbon to get you started. When our Post Office is open I could get them out to you or if you are local to Stamford and visiting Waitrose I could leave them out for collection. (I live right next door). Let me know!
No Cadbury's Mini Eggs were harmed during the filming of this blog.
Watch this space!
Lovely and colourful Vicky. I can't wait to see them on your tree.
